Common Voices #465 - International music / Police violence – 17.04.2025
This two-hour episode of “Common Voices” from Radio Corax is divided into two very different but equally important parts:
In the first hour, I invited a group of friends from my German language course to the Corax studio. Each person brought a song in their native language to share. The result was a beautiful and diverse collection – some songs were religious, others about love, and all reflected different cultures and personal backgrounds. It was a warm and engaging experience of musical exchange.
In the second hour, we listened to a episode from Radio Connection in Berlin:
Tatort am Sonntag, crime novels, Paw Patrol - our pop culture is full of police stories in which the officers almost always fight for the good. Police violence? Not in Germany! But the reality is not a heroic story, instead it tells of massive data misuse by police authorities, far-right police chats and (fatal) police violence that could affect anyone. Investigative journalist Mohamed Amjahid has spent years researching this dark field and has written a book entitled “Alles nur Einzelfälle? The system behind police violence”. We spoke to him.
